CORNERSTONE HOUSE: This program aims to provide a stable, Christian environment for some of the 1.5 million Street Children in the Philippines who would otherwise live on the streets. These children are homeless for a variety of reasons — for some they have been abandoned at an early age, 5-7 years old, while for others, they have been forced out of home by abusive parents, or parents that simply cannot afford to keep them, or for other reasons.
Whatever the reason, they find themselves forced to fend for themselves, providing for their own food and shelter, and in the case of some, even having to care for their younger brothers or sisters at an age when they should be being cared for themselves.
This program aims to give them hope and a future, an opportunity to experience a loving Christian family life, and to learn about, and grow their understanding of God.
VISITATION: Regular visits are made to male, female and youth prisons in the Cebu/Mactan area, as well as the Cebu City Drug Rehabilitation Center. During these times, Bible Study and councelling takes place, as well as assisting the inmates in other areas of their life. Concerts are conducted from time to time to ease the boredom of institutional life. Guitar classes, Bible Training Seminars, medical clinics and even circus performances have been conducted.
Regular visits are also made to the Eversley Child Sanitarium, the site of the leprosy hospital, to minster to the needs, both physical and spiritual, of the residents. Many of these have been fully recovered for years, but because of the stigma of leprosy, are unable to return to their home and family.
MEDICAL CLINICS are conducted by PCMI in areas of extreme poverty, and even inside some prisons, where access to medical treatment is limited. A team of highly skilled local doctors provide their time and expertise, and medicine is provided through PCMI funds. Early, simple medical intervention can save a life-time of suffering. In addition, optical and dental clinics are held from time to time.
PROJECT OBADIAH assists five groups of 10 familes financially and spiritually by conducting weekly meetings, and encouraging a growth in spiritual understanding. Through this program, a spirit of community is developed in the areas, with members helping each other, and even offering their place to more needy families. Limited livelihood micro-financing is also made available through this program.
REHABILITATION/TRAINING CENTER: A new development at Sibonga, 60km south from Cebu City, will become the CORNERSTONE NEW BEGINNINGS CENTER. Intended to offer training and rehabilitation, it will cater to dischargees from the leprosy hospital, drug/alcohol dependants and newly released prisoners. Offering a holistic treatment, the center will provide livelihood training, family conflict resolution and spiritual development and enlightenment in the setting of a working farm environment.
The buildings are currently being constructed, with the center set to commence operation in the first half of 2012. The center will cater to the needs of the entire family through cottages offering live-in accommodation.
